EAL programmes

Our specialist English as an Additional Language (EAL) programme helps international pupils develop English language skills quickly and confidently. Experienced EAL teachers work with pupils individually and in small groups, focusing on:

  • Academic English for success across the curriculum
  • Conversational skills for social situations
  • Subject-specific vocabulary
  • Reading and writing skills
  • Pronunciation and listening comprehension
  • Cambridge ESOL examination preparation

Pupils receiving EAL support remain fully integrated in mainstream classes, developing language skills through immersion while receiving targeted teaching to accelerate progress.

Short stay programmes

Our EAL immersive short stay programmes let pupils experience authentic British prep school life – a wonderful opportunity to improve their English, make international friends and sample the benefits of boarding. Short stay pupils attend lessons, take part in activities and live alongside our full-time pupils.

Our immersive short stay programmes are ideal for:

  • International pupils wanting to improve their English in an authentic environment
  • Families considering British boarding schools and wanting to try before committing
  • Pupils preparing for entrance to senior schools in the UK

We also welcome pupils for one, two or three terms. Many of our one-term pupils make incredible friends, coming back year after year and often returning for a full year or more.

Immersion programmes

Summer immersion course

Our summer course runs for the last four weeks of the summer term and is aimed at pupils who want to improve their English and experience boarding life. Pupils take part in day-to-day lessons, receive extra English teaching, go on trips and enjoy a residential activity weekend.

Term-time immersion courses

We also run short immersion courses at other times of the year for pupils who have good English and high academic ability, who fit easily into our existing classes. Term-time courses typically last from two weeks to one full term.

What parents say

Our son spent four weeks at Windlesham House during the summer. His English improved dramatically and he made wonderful friends. He is now applying for senior schools in England thanks to the confidence he gained.

International pupils

Windlesham House has a genuinely international community, with pupils from diverse cultural backgrounds. International pupils take part fully in school life, from lessons to sport, music, drama and weekend activities, and form groups deliberately mix day pupils, British boarders and international boarders.

  • Pastoral care – experienced boarding staff provide caring, individual support
  • Visa assistance – we guide families through the child student visa process
  • Family communication – we keep families informed and connected across time zones
  • Senior school preparation – expert guidance, examination and interview preparation

Many of our international pupils gain places at competitive senior schools including Charterhouse, Eton, Harrow, Winchester and Brighton College.

Boarding

Most international pupils are full boarders, staying at school five or more nights a week. They complete prep at school and enjoy weekends either at home (if living in the UK) or at school, where there is always an array of outings and activities. With over sixty full boarders, the evenings and weekends are far from dull.

Caring boarding staff and matrons look after your child around the clock, and we can arrange transfers to and from Gatwick and Heathrow airports at the start and end of term and at half-term.
